A LAKE SUPERIOR JOURNEY
Our North Shore and Gunflint Trail are places of extreme beauty and interest. One of the nation's most treasured vacation spots, this strip of land bordering the world's largest freshwater lake is home to an incredibly interesting history, and diverse variety of animals and plants, some found only here in our nation.
Our shores eight state parks are the crown jewels of the State Park system, visited by, hundreds of thousands yearly, spending millions.
I live and work in the Superior highlands, high above the lake in a maple forest, home of blazing fall colors, deep lake‑effect snow, blankets of wildflowers in the spring and cool summer days.
I can tell you that our north shore treasures are endless. The book takes you on a journey, north along the shore, beginning at Fond du Lac, south of Duluth through all eight state parks, our fascinating cities and villages, restaurants, subsistence farms, rock shops, ghost towns, Indian villages, the Gunflint Trail, the vast BWCA and much more. Duluth is covered only on the shore side as her historic sites and interesting places will fill volumes.
Many fine books exist on the shore, including county and city histories and picture books of all kinds. My intent is to put it all together, to give you a good understanding of the history and what the shore is like today.
Our north shore and wilderness areas are a fragile place, too long taken for granted, my hope is that my book creates in you a better appreciation of the region.
